GOP candidates for governor say western NC won't be forgotten

FLAT ROCK, N.C. - The leading Republican candidates for governor are promising not to forget western North Carolina if any of them are elected in November.

The four candidates made a joint appearance Wednesday at Blue Ridge Community College in Henderson County for a forum sponsored by Republican groups and the Times-News of Hendersonville.

Salisbury attorney Bill Graham, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, former Supreme Court Justice Robert Orr and state Sen. Fred Smith highlighted the importance of a governor having a strong presence in the mountains.

Orr grew up in the mountains and said if elected he would come to western North Carolina at least twice a month.

The candidates have participated in several forums on television and at local Republican events over the past few months.
