GOP candidates for governor say western NC won't be forgottenFLAT ROCK, N.C. - The leading Republican candidates for governor are promising not to forget western North Carolina if any of them are elected in November. The four candidates made a joint appearance Wednesday at Blue Ridge Community College in Henderson County for a forum sponsored by Republican groups and the Times-News of Hendersonville. Salisbury attorney Bill Graham, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, former Supreme Court Justice Robert Orr and state Sen. Fred Smith highlighted the importance of a governor having a strong presence in the mountains. Orr grew up in the mountains and said if elected he would come to western North Carolina at least twice a month. The candidates have participated in several forums on television and at local Republican events over the past few months. The AP article above was published on March 26, 2008 in the Hendersonville Times-News and is available online here.
